Setting the ignition timing

Setting the Ignition timing

Keyway and keys (wedges) are used by manufacturers in volume production in order to adjust the ignition timing accurately.

Hinweis:
The rotor is not secured by the keyways on the crank shaft, but only serves for precise fixation during installation! If your PVL rotor has no key way, this is by design right and it will not use a key. The rotor can be positioned at an angle of 360 ° on the crank side pin.

In rotors without grooves, it is better to align the stator precisely to the required position to allow a repeated removal of the rotor from the side of pivot (PVL puller necessary) to prevent, pushes only after determining the desired TDC position in the overlapping markings the rotor on the side pin.

For adjustment of the ignition timing one uses a disk or a dead-degree measuring apparatus (special tool) to measure the position of the piston before the top dead center (TDC). By the alignment of the markings on the rotor and the stator, in conjunction with the measurement of the piston position before top dead center to set the ignition timing of the ignition to the engine. If the stator is about half of the available setting is (slots on the stator), tighten the mounting screws of the stator by touch so that it does not move by itself, but can still be rotated by hand. Rotate the crankshaft slowly in the direction of rotation until the piston before the desired position OT (e.g. 1.6 mm) has been reached.

Hint

Clean before installing the rotor, both the bore of the rotor and the side pin of the crankshaft with contact cleaner, acetone or another suitable product to ensure that they are clean and free of grease, oil or other deposits. Install the rotor on the crankshaft, so that the marking for the ignition timing on the rotor with the mark on the crankshaft coincides, see recommendations in the Table A.
Many PVL stators have markings for both directions. Make sure that you select the correct mark for the rotation of your engine!

Applies when the rotor keyway:
Put the rotor exactly with the groove on the key side of the pin. Put the nut by hand to rest on the rotor. If the piston is at the desired ignition position before TDC, turn the stator until the marks on the rotor and stator cover. Screw the stator and tighten the rotor nut with the required manufacters torque.

Applies to rotors without grooves:
Put the rotor, roughly in the position so that it covers the marks on the rotor and stator and put the rotor in this position on the side pin. Tighten the rotor nut or bolt to the required torque.

If the mark on the stator is exact with the mark on the rotor cover, the ignition timing is set correctly. Check the correct ignition timing control.

Position the piston back in the desired position before TDC and check that the marks on the rotor / stator match. If not, simply loosen the screws on the stator and move the stator to the markings, tighten the stator screws back on correctly.

When the marks in the correct TDC position of the piston cannot be aligned, it is usually due to incorrect rotor position (with rotors without grooves), the rotor must be removed from the side spigot with PVL extractor. The adjustment process must be repeated.

Helpful to use a permanent marker pen to mark the housing and rotor.
